My forceps needle is a significant innovation for ophthalmic surgery: it increases efficiency and precision in complex procedures, particularly in IOL fixation. It was designed to provide intraocular access like a cannula while simultaneously functioning like forceps – for grasping tissue, suture material or haptics in a single step.
Michael Amon

Challenge
The intrascleral fixation of IOL haptics is a complex procedure that requires the utmost precision. When using conventional cannulas, an additional auxiliary instrument is needed to introduce the haptic into the lumen – which becomes even more difficult for the second haptic. In addition, with conventional cannulas there is a risk that the haptic slips out again.

Solution
A combination of a cannula-shaped probe and an internal micro-forceps. The instrument enables intraocular access, grasping of the haptic, holding it in the lumen and externalization – all in one continuous step. This significantly minimizes the risk of the haptic slipping out.
Versatile applications

- Scleral fixation of various IOL designs
- IOL iris fixation
- Fixation of capsular tension rings
- Fixation of capsular segments
- Gore-Tex and polypropylene sutures

Features of the forceps needle acc. to Amon
- 1. The bevelled, needle-shaped tip provides outstanding penetration properties for sclerotomies and scleral tunnels
- 2. The micro-fine grasping forceps enables precise and secure handling of IOL haptics and suture materials
- 3. Secure grasping prevents unwanted slipping of IOL haptics or suture materials

In practice
In an exclusive booth talk with Prof. Dr. Michael Amon at DOC 2025, it became impressively clear why his micro forceps needle, developed together with Geuder, is a genuine advance in ophthalmic surgery.
